Interestingly the 2x2 wasn't at first created by Ernő Rubik, it was created by Larry D. Nichols, who lated sued him for creating a replica of his 2x2 cube. The court affirmed that Rubik's 2x2 cube did infringe Nichols's patent, but the 3x3 did not. Although simpler than the 3x3, it still has some difficulty in it. It was originally called the "Pocket Cube".
