Originally called the "Rubik's Revenge", it was invented by Péter Sebestény. It was originally supposed to be called the "Sebestény Cube" when a last-minute decision changed its name to "Rubik's revenge", mainly to attract more people who were playing with the original Rubik's Cube. Unlike the 3x3 puzzle, it is a cube composed of sides of 4 by 4 small squares. This brings a ton of difficulty, including special cases such as PLL and OLL parity.
In the case of bigger cubes such as the 4x4, one method is mainly used : the Yau Method.
Here is a video to learn the Yau Method for 4x4 : Click here for the Yau Method tutorial !
There are many great 4x4s. Here are my top picks :
The AoSu WR M is a great 4x4 ! Although it is a bit expensive, it has very good turning speed and is very smooth. This cube is slightly smaller, at a size of 59mm, compared to other cubes which measure 60mm per side. Add some fast lube, and the AoSu WRM is as fast as a good 3x3 !

The Gan 460 M is the only 4x4 cube made by Gan. It is very surprising that Gan made a 4x4, since it concentrates mainly on 3x3s, 2x2s and sometimes Skewb, Pyraminxes and Megaminxes. This 4x4's outer layers are stunningly good, basically as good as a 3x3's layers, but its inner layers are not as good.

The YJ MGC 4x4 is very good for its price ! The fact that it is magnetic while costing only 19.95$, compared to 45$ for the AoSu and the 460 M, makes this cube worth it. The outer edge pieces are slightly wider to improve stability. The MGC 4x4 is very fast and smooth.
